Dhaka Organising Climate Change Conference

Bangladesh is going to organise an international conference of the Most Vulnerable Countries (MVC) of the adverse impacts of climate change. The goal of the conference is to bring the MVCs under an umbrella by creating a separate negotiation group under UN framework and to address their concerns more effectively at global level.

Bangladeshi State minister for Environment and Forests Dr Hasan Mahmud said on sunday, “We opted for MVC and already communicated the idea with some countries mostly vulnerable to climate change to create a separate group to make our voice loud in Copenhagen and beyond,”

He also said, under the LDC group, Bangladesh and other MVCs are unable to take bold and effective position in the global negotiation tables as the nature of the vulnerability and interests of MVCs don’t suit with others which are less exposed to climate change.

Dr Hasan Mahmud was addressing a discussion on “Reaching Copenhagen Climate Summit: Some Thoughts on Bangladesh Position at Negotiation” at the National Press Club in Dhaka. Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh (FEJB) organized the discussion.

Prominent environmentalist Dr. Ainun Nishat, Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Dr. Asaduzzaman, environment specialist Dr. Rezaul Karim also spoke at the discussion. FEJB Chairman Quamrul Islam Chowdhury presented the keynote paper on the draft of global negotiation on climate change, technology transfer and Bangladesh position at climate change negotiation.

Dr. Hasan said, “Many countries responded positively and agreed that Bangladesh as one of the worst victims of climate change should take the lead to bring the countries exposed to climate change under a forum to work for their own causes”.
